The Kidney Kid Journey

The Kidney Kid journey

Life for a young person with kidney disease, a kidney related condition or urinary issues is challenging. At each stage of their journey, we understand their health needs will change along with the kind of support they require.

From birth to 8 years old

Our primary communication in the initial years of a Kidney Kid’s life is with their parents and caregivers. Our focus is ensuring they do not feel isolated, are well supported and confidently understand we are there for their child and their whānau.

From 8-15 years old

The Kidney Kids team supports the parents/caregivers and their Kidney Kid as they grow older, slowly allowing the child more control over their medical management. As our kids near the age of 16, we make a conscious effort to ensure the Kidney Kid fully understands their condition and feels confident with self-management.

From 16+

From 16 years of age, our Kidney Kids are recognised as young adults. We continue to enable them to grow and develop their social and life skills through the Kidney Kids Youth Programme, to prepare them for all facets of their adult lives.

Not one Kidney Kid’s journey is the same. This is why we strive to work closely with our children/young people and their families, helping them navigate through all stages of being a Kidney Kid, no matter where they are on their journey.
